Alvin Scott Griggs, Sr., is a member of the Urbana Rotary Club and past Club president. He has been very active in Rotary at the club and district level in many official positions.
In 2003 Alvin attended the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne, Australia.
Alvin is the husband of Mildred Barnes Griggs. Alvin and Mildred are the proud parents of two sons, Alvin Scott Griggs, Jr. and Paul O’ Neil Griggs. Alvin, Mildred and their sons are Paul Harris Fellows.
Alvin is a retired public school educator. As an educator, he served as a classroom teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal and Director of the Champaign County Head Start Program. He completed thirty-two wonderful and enjoyable years in education. He has worked in all levels of education. His undergraduate degree in education was completed at Arkansas A.M. & N College and his work for his Master and Administrative Certificate degrees was completed at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

Alvin’s Rotary Classification is Drycleaner Owner not Educator. His family background and his own interest in business led Alvin to start a local business in Champaign-Urbana in 1979. His business has operated successfully for twenty-seven years. Alvin enjoys the world of business and shares his knowledge and interest with others in the community.
“Service Above Self” has always been a part of Alvin’s life from Boy Scouts of America to Rotary. He has served as president or chair of the following boards in the community, county and state: Urban League of Champaign County, Habitat for Humanity Champaign and Piatt County, Champaign Park District, and Workforce Investment Board of East Central Illinois; and, he is a member of the Champaign County Design Conservation, Community Collaboration for Economic Development, and NAACP. He has served as the chair of the Workforce Investment Board for more than twelve years and is on his second term as an elected park district commissioner. He was elected for 2007-08 by his peers to co-chair the Illinois Association of Park Districts/Illinois Park and Recreation Association Joint distinguished Agency Committee.
